I can't just point a finger at Obama, because no man is an island. But I think back to the not-so-distant past in American history, and the response of the socially liberal to the truly important issues of the day. How were they able to push through an agenda? How were Roosevelt, Kennedy and (ugh)yes, even Johnson able to push through their pet legislation? Was the country in more dire straights? Maybe. There is no question that 1/3 of a nation unemployed and civil rights for all citizens ARE bigger issues than universal health care. <br /><br />Today, we are only facing 9%-12% unemployment, 41 of 50 states face bankruptcy, and our health care and education systems are at the bottom of the industrialized world. Hmm. OK. That is not the Great Depression or the March on Selma. But there is certainly significant suffering.
